Change of command ceremonies between Capt. Francis X. McInerney and Capt. T.J. Ryan, who took over command of Destroyer Squadron 21 on board Nicholas, 7 August 1943. Capt. McInerney (right) and Capt. Ryan (left) exchange greetings as Capt. McInerney leaves Nicholas. It had served as his flagship for many months during the first and second shellings of Kolombangara, the Battle of Kula Gulf, the Battle of Kolombangara, the rescue of Helena survivors, and many other actions.
